God's Story: The Fall

Here is Part 2 of our skit on "God's Story".  My intent for this continuing theme was for the teens to see and understand God's Story from beginning to end, connecting all the dots in one continuous story.

God’s Story: The Fall

1: God created everything.

2: God created a man and a woman

3: He blessed them

4: He gave them charge over his creation

5: They had food

1: They had work

2: They had each other

3: And they had an intimate relationship with their Creator.

4: Millions of reasons to enjoy

5: Millions of opportunities to do good

1: And millions of chances to soak in God’s blessings.

2: God empowered them to be caretakers of all of creation.

3: And he told them to be fruitful and multiply.

4: Hold on there, they enjoyed multiplication and fruit?!?!  I can understand the fruit thing but multiplication, really?  Math has to be a part of God’s curse!

3: Are you serious? Being told to multiply and be fruitful refers to SEX! God told them to make babies and to enjoy all aspects of their relationship!!

4:  OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH . . . I get it now.  I’m just slightly embarrassed now.  Please go on with the story.

5: Human beings in relationship to the Creator of the Universe.

1: Loving God

2: Loving each other

3: Loving all that the creation has to offer.

4: Only one thing.

5: Just one bad choice

1: A single way to disobey God.

2: Free will needed to be established

3: So that God knew that their love was genuine

4: The story goes like this . . .

5: Now the Lord God had planted a garden in the east, in Eden;

1: and there he put the man he had formed.

2: The Lord God made all kinds of trees grow out of the ground

3: trees that were pleasing to the eye and good for food.

4: In the middle of the garden were the tree of life

3: and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

2: The Lord God took the man

3: and put him in the Garden of Eden

4: to work it and take care of it.

2: And the Lord God commanded the man,

1: “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat of it you will certainly die.”

3: Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made.

4: He said to the woman,

5: “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”

3: The devil began his attack by QUESTIONING GOD.

2: The woman said to the serpent,

4: “We may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, but God did say, ‘You must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you must not touch it, or you will die.’”

5: “You will not certainly die,”

2: the serpent said to the woman.

5:  “For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”

3: The devil’s next attack came by DISAGREEING WITH GOD by questioning his motives and consequences.

1: When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food

2: and pleasing to the eye,

3: and also desirable for gaining wisdom,

4: she took some

5: and ate it.

1: She also gave some to her husband,

2: who was with her,

5: and he ate it.

3: The devil’s conversation lead to them DISOBEYING God.

4: You mean to tell me that the man was there the whole time and he didn’t protect his woman?!?!

3: Yeah, this would be the first time in which a guy was a dork by not being a gentleman and defender of the one he says he loves.

2: Can we get back to the story now?

3: Oh yeah, go ahead, sorry.

1: Then the eyes of both of them were opened,

4: and they realized they were naked;

5: so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.

3: At this point, because they disobeyed, now they are DESERTING GOD

2: Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day,

4: and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.

5: But the Lord God called to the man,

1: “Where are you?”

2: He answered,

5: “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

2: And he said,

1: “Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree that I commanded you not to eat from?”

2: The man said,

5: “The woman you put here with me - she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it.”

2: Then the Lord God said to the woman,

1: “What is this you have done?”

2: The woman said,

4: “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.”

3: And now they DISOWNED God’s accountability by blaming everyone else but themselves for their mistakes.

2: So the Lord God said to the serpent,

1: “Because you have done this, “Cursed are you above all livestock and all wild animals! You will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your life. And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.”

2: To the woman he said,

1: “I will make your pains in childbearing very severe; with pain you will give birth to children. Your desire will be for your husband, and he will rule over you.”

2: To Adam he said,

1: “Because you listened to your wife and ate from the tree about which I commanded you, ‘You must not eat of it,’ “Cursed is the ground because of you; through painful toil you will eat of it all the days of your life.  It will produce thorns and thistles for you, and you will eat the plants of the field. By the sweat of your brow you will eat your food until you return to the ground, since from it you were taken; for dust you are and to dust you will return.”

5: Adam named his wife Eve,

3: because she would become the mother of all the living.

4: The Lord God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.

2: And the Lord God said,

1: “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.”

3: So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden

4: to work the ground from which he had been taken.

5: After he drove them out,

1: he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim

2: and a flaming sword flashing back and forth

4: to guard the way to the tree of life.

3: Finally now they have become DESERVING of God’s discipline.

5: And now all of creation is infected with sin.

1: Cain killed Abel.

3: And things continued to get worse to the point where God actually regretted making humans.

2: He created a flood to wipe off all the evil in the world,

4: Saving just one family in the process.

5: For you see, what was only one bad choice that the first humans could make,

1: Has now opened the door to millions of bad choices for all of us to make.

2: Sin grew and grew,

3: Like an infection

4: Like a plague.

1: It is in us,

5: It is all around us.

3: Is there an answer?

2: Is there a way out of this mess?

4: Does God give up on us humans,

1: Or does he find a way?

God's Story: The Creation

Last year we did a year-long theme called "God's Story" for our small groups.  Once a month we had the drama team do a Reader's Theatre style skit.  This was the first one . . .

God’s Story: The Creation

4:  In the beginning God created the . . .

2:  Oh wait, isn’t this the verse that talks about baseball in the Bible?

4:  Um, I said the beginning. Not the big inning!

2:  Oh sorry.  Carry on.

4:  Thank you.  Don’t interrupt me like that again.  Got it?

2:  Yep.  Go ahead. Start over.  I won’t interrupt.  I promise.

4:  Okay then. Shall we begin now?  This is the story of how God created the universe. First this!

3:   God created the Heavens

4:  and Earth

3:  all you see,

4:  all you don’t see.

1:  Earth was a soup of nothingness

4:  a bottomless emptiness,

2:  an inky blackness.

3:  God’s Spirit brooded like a bird above the watery abyss. God spoke:

5:  “Light!”

1:  And light appeared.  God saw that light was good and separated light from dark.

3:  God named the light Day,

2:  he named the dark Night.

4:  It was evening, it was morning - Day One.

1:  God spoke:

5:  “Sky! In the middle of the waters; separate water from water!”

4:  God made sky. He separated the water under sky from the water above sky.

2:  And there it was: he named sky the Heavens;

3:  It was evening, it was morning - Day Two.

1:  God spoke:

5:  “Separate! Water-beneath-Heaven, gather into one place; Land, appear!”

4:  And there it was. God named the land Earth.

2:  He named the pooled water Ocean.

3:  God saw that it was good.

1:  God spoke:

5:  “Earth, green up! Grow all varieties of seed-bearing plants, Every sort of fruit-bearing            tree.”

2:  And there it was. Earth produced green seed-bearing plants, all varieties, And fruit-bearing trees of all sorts.

4:  God saw that it was good.

3:  It was evening, it was morning - Day Three.

1:  God spoke:

5:  “Lights! Come out!  Shine in Heaven’s sky!  Separate Day from Night. Mark seasons and days and years, Lights in Heaven’s sky to give light to Earth.”

2:  And there it was. God made two big lights, the larger to take charge of Day,

4:  The smaller to be in charge of Night;

3:  and he made the stars, God placed them in the heavenly sky to light up Earth

1:  And oversee Day and Night, to separate light and dark.

4:  God saw that it was good.

3:  It was evening, it was morning - Day Four.

1: God spoke:

5:  “Swarm, Ocean, with fish and all sea life! Birds, fly through the sky over Earth!”

2:  God created the huge whales, all the swarm of life in the waters,

3:  And every kind and species of flying birds.

4:  God saw that it was good.

1:  God blessed them:

5:  “Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Ocean! Birds, reproduce on Earth!”

3:  It was evening, it was morning - Day Five.

1:  God spoke:

5:  “Earth, generate life! Every sort and kind: cattle and reptiles and wild animals—all kinds.”

2:  And there it was: wild animals of every kind,

4:  Cattle of all kinds,

3:  every sort of reptile and bug.

4:  God saw that it was good.

1:  God spoke:

5:  “Let us make human beings in our image, make them reflecting our nature so they can be responsible for the fish in the sea, the birds in the air, the cattle, and, yes, Earth itself, and every animal that moves on the face of Earth.”

2:  God created human beings;

4:  he created them godlike, reflecting God’s nature.

3:  He created them male and female.

1:  God blessed them:

5:  “Prosper! Reproduce! Fill Earth! Take charge. Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that moves on the face of Earth.”

1:  Then God said,

5:  “I’ve given you every sort of seed-bearing plant on Earth
And every kind of fruit-bearing tree, given them to you for food.
To all animals and all birds, everything that moves and breathes,
I give whatever grows out of the ground for food.”

2:  And there it was.

4:  God looked over everything he had made;

2:  it was so good,

4:  so very good!

3:  It was evening, it was morning - Day Six.

1:  Heaven and Earth were finished, down to the last detail.

4:  By the seventh day God had finished his work

2:  On the seventh day he rested from all his work.

3:  God blessed the seventh day.  He made it a Holy Day because on that day he rested            from his work, all the creating God had done.

5:  This is the story of how it all started, of Heaven and Earth when they were created.

Not A Fan Skit

Here is a skit we used that went along with the "Not a Fan" small group study.

Announcer: And welcome to tonight’s game!  The Loveland Tigers vs. Jesus!  Jesus won the coin toss and he is receiving.  Loveland kicks the ball . . . Jesus catches it on the 10 yard line . . . he takes it for 20 yards and is down at the 30.

Man #1:  Come on Jesus!  You can do this!

Woman #1: Jesus, Jesus he’s our man. If he can’t do it, NO ONE can!

Announcer: Jesus hikes the ball. . . fads back . . . releases a giant pass. This is one of his signature passes!  The Hail Mom!. . . he sprints to the end zone with     superhuman speed and catches the ball he has just thrown!!! Touchdown!  I have never seen anything like that!

Man#1:  Way to go Jesus!  I’m your number 1 fan!

Woman#1: Oh no you did not just say that.  I AM his number 1 fan.

Man #1:  Oh yeah, well guess what! I own a Bible! And I have read most of it!

Woman #1: Well I have three Bibles and I am reading it through for the second time!

Man #1: Well, I go to church . . . most of the time.

Woman #1: I go to a United Methodist church every Sunday!

Man #1: So what.  I am still his biggest fan.

Announcer:  Jesus kicks the ball to Loveland and it goes all the way out to the parking             lot!  Loveland will have it at the 20 yard line.  The Tigers get into formation.  They hike the ball. . . . The quarter back is looking for an open receiver but everywhere he looks Jesus reappears right in front of the receivers! He throws the ball to #30. JESUS INTERCEPTS!  HE COULD GO ALL THE WAY. . . . the 30 . . . the 20 . . . the 10 and TOUCHDOWN!  Wow.  We are only 20 seconds into the game and it is already Jesus 14, the Loveland Tigers 0.

Woman #1:  Jesus!  Jesus! I love you!

Man #1: Oh no you don’t!  I love him more.  He knows I am his greatest fan.

Woman #1: Lord I lift your name on high, Lord I love to sing your praises!

Man #1: Stop that! This is no place for you to start singing you show off!

Announcer:  Jesus calls a time out.  He meets on the sideline with God the Father and             God the Spirit.  They speak to the referee.

Referee: Jesus calls for a substitution.  Will Frank Cunningham please report to the bench.

Man #1: Why that’s ME!  Why is Jesus calling me down to the bench?  He can’t expect             me to play for him against the whole Tiger defense!

Woman #1: Oh man.  I am glad he did not call on me.  Okay big talker.  Go show Jesus             your stuff.  You are his number 1 fan remember!

Man #1: I said I was his number one FAN!  But I don’t want to follow him out onto the field!  I only want to pay for my ticket and watch him play!

Woman #1: When Jesus calls, you better not stalls!  Ha!

Announcer:  Loveland comes back out on the field but something seems wrong. Everyone is having a hard time just walking to their posts.  Oh, it looks like Jesus did one of his signature moves by turning their water into wine!!  Silly Jesus.  Frank Cunningham comes out onto the field for Team Jesus.  He hikes the ball, and gets sacked immediately.

Woman #1:  Frank, Frank, he’s our man, if he can’t do it then JESUS CAN!

Announcer: Will Mary Marcowitz report to the Jesus bench.

Woman #1: What!?!  Me?!? Why me??  I can’t play.  Jesus is a thousand times better than anyone else.  Why would he want my help.  I am better at being just a fan rather than a follower.  I don’t want to follow Jesus out onto the field.

Announcer: Mary joins Frank out onto the field.  Mary hikes the ball. . . Frank takes the             ball for a run up the middle and is hit by a strong Loveland defense.

Man #2:  I paid good money to come here and see Jesus play.  Why is he putting other people in for his team.  He is already the best ever.

Man #3:  I don’t know what his deal is but I sure hope he does not ask either one of us to go down there.  I feel much safer up here in the seats.

Man #2: Tell me about it!  I am not chancing it down there!  Jesus is more than capable             of playing this game better than I could ever have.

Woman #2:  But maybe that is the point.  Maybe, just maybe, Jesus isn’t interested in us being fans more than he wants us to be followers.  Imagine what it would be like to follow Jesus out onto the field rather than just watch from the sidelines.

Man #3: It is much easier to just be a fan!  To be an actual follower takes a lot of courage and sacrifice.

Man #2: Yeah, I am comfortable just cheering for Jesus.  There is not much more I can do to help him with his cause.

Man #3: You got that right.  Besides, what would he want with us.  What could we possibly do that could make things any better?

Woman#2: What if we all got out of the stands and followed Jesus out onto the field.  If we all played our part as a follower imagine all we could do together!

Man #3: You may have something there. I never thought of it that way.

Man #2: True, but I feel safer staying right here and cheering for Jesus!  GOOOO JESUS!

Man #3:  Woo hoo!  Jesus rocks!

Woman #2: Here am I Jesus! Send me!

Remembering Grandma Ding Dong

It has been about a year now since my grandma passed away. Here is the message I gave at her funeral.
I am pretty sure that anyone here who is not connected to the family wonders how this sweet elderly lady got the nickname of “Grandma Ding Dong”. Apparently I am the sole source of the name. The story goes that when I was just a toddler, we would go visit grandma and one of the cool features of her house was that she had a crazy collection of clocks. And at the top of the hour you would be fully entertained as all these clocks would go off. As a young child, this provided an endless cycle of 59 minutes of building expectation and then a climactic explosion of sounds for at least a minute. I must have loved this so much that the very things attached to grandma’s walls became for me the sole way of identifying her. Thus came the nick name “Grandma Ding Dong”.

As I grew up with my brother and sister, we would continually make trips down to Cincinnati to visit Grandma Ding Dong. With every visit, Grandma was sure to make sure we would experience Cincinnati. We would order LaRosa’s pizza. Then she would take us out to dinner at Montgomery Inn. Now this was typically a very big treat more so than now. The reason being was because my grandfather was good friends with Ted Gregory and was instrumental in giving Mr. Gregory his first loan to start his very own restaurant. With that history in mind, the Gregory’s never forgot about that relationship so whenever Grandma would take us to one of the now world famous restaurants, we would get the red carpet treatment. No waiting in lines, we would be seated immediately and have drinks and appetizers brought out to our table, and the feasting would begin. We were always impressed with her connections especially with Montgomery Inn. And I even still remember the times that Grandma would take us to King’s Island back in the days when Paramount owned it. Unlike my dad, grandma was never too old to hit the roller coasters with us. I remember being amazed that she actually went on the Beast with me when it first came out.

Over the years though, grandma struggled with some addictions. These addictions took their toll on her as alcohol would bring out a dark side to her that often would lead to damaged relationships. As grandchildren we might have caught glimpses of this by seeing the pain and frustration in was taking on our parents. But if there is one thing that can be said about the women on my mom’s side of the family, it’s that no matter how they lived their lives, they seemed to defy all rules of health and logic and still live forever. My great-grandma lived well into her 90’s with a diet of fried chicken and ice cream. She lived in a 3rd floor apartment and continued to work at a movie theatre that used to be over by Kenwood Mall up till the time that she passed away. Grandma Ding Dong, at times in her life, smoked like a chimney, drank like a sailor, and had the temper and biting sarcasm of Marine sergeant.

But once again, defying all logic, Grandma took the old adage of “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks” and just turned that one completely upside down, because in her later years in life, she had a dramatic softening of the heart. I attribute this to the faith of our entire family and the fact that God is always in pursuit of us. We worship a God that does not ever give up on us no matter what. I know from working in ministry that there are times where you just want to wash your hands of some people and convince yourself that you tried to help as much as you could, but it is a hopeless cause. Luckily, we worship a God whose love is relentless and never, ever gives up on anyone no matter what. What we have seen in the life of Grandma is that God came into her life and restored her life, rebuilt a community of love and affection around her, and helped her let go of the things that held her in bondage.

One of the final victories in her life was during the time that my dad was diagnosed with a brain aneurism. He had to go through a very complicated surgery that he very well may not have survived. Grandma told me after the successful surgery and recovery that she made a deal with God. If God would be willing to allow dad to make it through this surgery, she would be willing to give up smoking for Him. And wouldn’t you know it, she did just that. She dropped that most difficult habit that held onto her for decades like it was nothing.

Grandma Ding Dong will be missed. But we know because of our faith, that it is only a temporary departure. One day we will all be reunited and brought into the kingdom of God. Jesus came to restore all things back to the way they were meant to be. He continually transformed people’s lives by taking away whatever was considered “unclean” in their lives and bringing them back into community with others. And he continues to do that today through the power of God’s Spirit.

So if there is one thing you can take away from today’s memorial service it is this: God loves you, from the moment you were conceived, His love has been pursuing you, and he is calling you into a relationship of healing, restoration and wholeness. He has been calling you and me into a relationship the way it always was meant to be. You can fight it. You can ignore it. You can deny it. But the reality is that He never gives up on us. And when we finally come to terms with that and accept that, then we discover what it means to be in a right relationship with God and with others. And it is then, that we realize that we would never want it any other way.
